So Jack went away to seek his fortune. He<br />

travelled on for a long time, <strong>and</strong> at last he came<br />

to a town where a king lived. The king had<br />

one beautiful daughter who had many suitors;<br />

<strong>and</strong> he had promised her h<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> first man<br />

who could make her laugh three times.<br />

Now it happened that Jack was very illshaped,<br />

ugly <strong>and</strong> awkward. He strolled about<br />

<strong>the</strong> village listening to all <strong>the</strong> gossip, <strong>and</strong> at<br />

last he went to <strong>the</strong> king s palace among all <strong>the</strong><br />

suitors <strong>and</strong> visitors.<br />

&quot;Why are you<br />

here?&quot; <strong>the</strong> servants asked him.<br />

At first he would make no answer, but when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y asked him again,<br />

he said:<br />

&quot;Is it true that <strong>the</strong> princess will marry <strong>the</strong><br />

first man who will make her laugh three times?&quot;<br />

&quot;Yes,&quot; <strong>the</strong>y said,<br />

&quot;it is true.&quot;<br />

said &quot;Then,&quot; Jack, will &quot;I stay.&quot;<br />

So Jack was taken into <strong>the</strong> room where <strong>the</strong><br />

princess was waiting with all <strong>the</strong> suitors <strong>and</strong><br />

judges of <strong>the</strong> trial. At once he took out his<br />

magical dish, <strong>and</strong> asked <strong>the</strong> princess to taste<br />

<strong>the</strong> food. She took a bit on <strong>the</strong> tip of her<br />

tongue, <strong>and</strong> when she found it so delicious she<br />

began to eat, <strong>and</strong> offered some to all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

To everybody s astonishment, <strong>the</strong> food upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> plate grew no less, although <strong>the</strong>y all ate un<br />

til <strong>the</strong>y thought <strong>the</strong>y could eat no more. Then
