LEGENDS OF GLOOSCAP 283<br />

The old woman, weak <strong>and</strong> tottering, brought<br />

in four beavers, <strong>and</strong> began to dress <strong>the</strong>m. But<br />

she was so feeble <strong>and</strong> slow that <strong>the</strong> master<br />

of <strong>the</strong> wigwam said, &quot;Uchkeen, my younger<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, take <strong>the</strong> work from <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong><br />

finish it yourself.&quot;<br />

The young hunter dressed <strong>the</strong> beaver, <strong>and</strong> in<br />

a short time he had cooked a large portion, <strong>and</strong><br />

set it before <strong>the</strong> weary, hungry travellers.<br />

The Indians had rested in this quiet place<br />

for several days, when one morning <strong>the</strong> master<br />

of <strong>the</strong> wigwam said, &quot;Uchkeen, my younger<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, ba<strong>the</strong> Keejoo s face.&quot;<br />

The younger bro<strong>the</strong>r did as he was told, <strong>and</strong><br />

at once <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r s wrinkles vanished,<br />

<strong>and</strong> she became young again <strong>and</strong> very fair. He<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>com</strong>bed her hair <strong>and</strong> braided it, <strong>and</strong> it was<br />

no longer white, but black <strong>and</strong> glossy. And<br />

<strong>the</strong>n he dressed her in a beautiful robe, <strong>and</strong><br />

now, instead of being old, bent down <strong>and</strong> feeble,<br />

she became straight <strong>and</strong> active <strong>and</strong> strong.<br />

The Indians looked on in wonder. They<br />

realised, now, that whoever <strong>the</strong>ir host might<br />

be, he was possessed of <strong>great</strong> power, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y knew that he had done this wonderful thing<br />

to show <strong>the</strong>m what manner of man he was.<br />

The master now invited his guests to walk<br />

with him, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y went out <strong>the</strong>y saw<br />

that <strong>the</strong> place was beautiful beyond belief.
