There in <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong> lake was a <strong>great</strong><br />

canoe, full of Indian warriors, pointing <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

arrows at him.<br />

Keoonik was sorry, now, that he had vowed<br />

to kill <strong>the</strong> first Indian he saw; because an In<br />

dian could not break his vow, after it had once<br />

been made. So he plunged into <strong>the</strong> water <strong>and</strong><br />

swam toward <strong>the</strong> canoe.<br />

The Indians shot <strong>the</strong>ir arrows at him, <strong>and</strong>,<br />

stinging with pain, he was forced to turn<br />

back to <strong>the</strong> shore. Then he decided that he<br />

would not pursue Ableegumooch any longer.<br />

So he went back through <strong>the</strong> forest to his own<br />

wigwam.<br />

As soon as Keoonik had returned to <strong>the</strong> for<br />

est, <strong>the</strong> canoe with its warriors <strong>and</strong> <strong>chief</strong> dis<br />

appeared, <strong>and</strong> Ableegumooch scampered off<br />

into <strong>the</strong> woods with <strong>the</strong> string of eels for his<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r to cook for dinner. And while he<br />

was enjoying <strong>the</strong>m, Ableegumooch decided that<br />

he had retaliated upon <strong>the</strong> otter.<br />

And kespeadooksit <strong>the</strong> story ends.
