The old woman <strong>the</strong>n became angry.<br />

The Badger waited until <strong>the</strong> old women were<br />

asleep once more, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n he touched <strong>the</strong> foot<br />

of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r old woman with <strong>the</strong> hot coal. First<br />

she dreamed that she was walking on hot s<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> over roasting rocks in <strong>the</strong> summer time;<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n she dreamed that <strong>the</strong> Mohawks were<br />

cooking her at a death fire. Then she awoke,<br />

<strong>and</strong> seeing where she was, she began to scold<br />

Mrs. Bear for burning her <strong>and</strong><br />

; very soon <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were having a merry time of it with <strong>the</strong>ir quar<br />

relling.<br />

Now <strong>the</strong> Badger, seeing <strong>the</strong> old women scold<br />

ing <strong>and</strong> fighting, began to laugh <strong>and</strong> he<br />

; thought<br />

it so funny that he laughed harder <strong>and</strong> harder,<br />

until at last, he split his sides open, <strong>and</strong> fell<br />

down dead <strong>the</strong>n <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re !<br />

In <strong>the</strong> morning, <strong>the</strong>re lay <strong>the</strong> dead Badger<br />

before <strong>the</strong> door. The old women skinned him,<br />

<strong>and</strong> dressed him for <strong>the</strong>ir breakfast, <strong>and</strong><br />

stretched his skin to dry on a bush outside.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong>y hung <strong>the</strong> kettle; <strong>the</strong> water was soon<br />

boiling, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y dropped <strong>the</strong> Badger in. But<br />

as soon as <strong>the</strong> Badger began to scald, he came<br />

to life. In a moment more he was as alive as<br />

ever! With a <strong>great</strong> leap, he jumped out of <strong>the</strong><br />

kettle; he rushed out of <strong>the</strong> lodge; he snatched
