THE BADGER AND THE EOCK<br />

MAGICIAN<br />

WHEN <strong>the</strong> Badger had been rescued by his<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, after <strong>the</strong> Culloo s punishment,<br />

<strong>the</strong> two walked along until <strong>the</strong>y came to <strong>the</strong> top<br />

of a high mountain. Great rocks were lying<br />

all about. There was one rock so near <strong>the</strong> edge<br />

of <strong>the</strong> slope that it suggested an opportunity<br />

for sport to <strong>the</strong> Badger. He turned it over<br />

with a pole, <strong>and</strong> away it went rolling down <strong>the</strong><br />

mountain. The two bro<strong>the</strong>rs ran after it, chal<br />

lenging it to a race. By <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> rock had<br />

<strong>com</strong>e to <strong>the</strong> foot of <strong>the</strong> mountain, <strong>the</strong> Badger<br />

<strong>and</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r had gained upon it; <strong>and</strong> soon<br />

<strong>the</strong>y passed it <strong>and</strong> left it far behind.<br />

The Badger <strong>and</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r went on until<br />

<strong>the</strong>y reached a good resting place, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re<br />

<strong>the</strong>y prepared to spend <strong>the</strong> night. They built<br />

a fire <strong>and</strong> killed a musk-rat <strong>and</strong> began to cook<br />

it for <strong>the</strong>ir evening meal. While it was cook<br />

ing, <strong>the</strong>y heard a <strong>great</strong> noise that seemed to<br />

<strong>com</strong>e from <strong>the</strong> direction of <strong>the</strong> rock which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had challenged to a race. They looked, <strong>and</strong><br />

what should <strong>the</strong>y see, but <strong>the</strong> rock racing after<br />
