The two runners started for a race around<br />

<strong>the</strong> globe. In four minutes <strong>the</strong> Swift Kunner,<br />

who had entered <strong>the</strong> lists for his friend, re<br />

turned. He had won this race.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> Chief proposed contests to show<br />

who was <strong>the</strong> strongest among <strong>the</strong> suitors.<br />

There were contests of lifting <strong>and</strong> hurling<br />

rocks, wrestling <strong>and</strong> pulling at one ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

In all of <strong>the</strong>se games <strong>the</strong> Log Carrier, who had<br />

been <strong>the</strong> first to join <strong>the</strong> travellers, came out<br />

victor.<br />

There was still ano<strong>the</strong>r contest to be held.<br />

The suitors must coast down <strong>the</strong> mountain <strong>and</strong><br />

leap over <strong>the</strong> cliff with <strong>the</strong>ir sleds. The Megumoowesoo<br />

volunteered to coast with his<br />

friend. Two o<strong>the</strong>r Indians, who were mighty<br />

magicians, went on ano<strong>the</strong>r sled. This was<br />

such a dangerous race that everyone was very<br />

much excited. The whole village turned out to<br />

see <strong>the</strong> race. Down <strong>the</strong> steep mountain side<br />

<strong>the</strong> sleds dashed! When <strong>the</strong> Megumoowesoo<br />

reached <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> cliff, he gave a <strong>great</strong><br />

shout, <strong>and</strong> down over <strong>the</strong> cliff <strong>the</strong>y dashed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ground, <strong>and</strong> sped on through <strong>the</strong> village<br />

<strong>and</strong> on to <strong>the</strong> river.<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>r Indians, although <strong>the</strong>y had so much<br />

magical power, did not have enough to carry<br />

<strong>the</strong>m safely over <strong>the</strong> cliff; so <strong>the</strong>y were killed.<br />

After this contest, <strong>the</strong> Chief declared that<br />

<strong>the</strong> strangers had won <strong>the</strong> Beautiful Bride, <strong>and</strong>
