&quot;I am avenging <strong>the</strong> sea maiden/ thought<br />

I have a long journey before<br />

Pulowech; &quot;but<br />

me, <strong>and</strong> a work needing all of my magic.<br />

As he said this, he saw a poor, little squir<br />

rel crawling along nearly dead; he picked<br />

it up <strong>and</strong> stroked it, <strong>and</strong> put it in his<br />

bosom, saying, must &quot;You fight for me, my<br />

brave little fellow ;<br />

but I will be near you to aid<br />

you.&quot;<br />

Pulowech followed <strong>the</strong> path by <strong>the</strong> ocean, <strong>and</strong><br />

soon it led him over high hills, toward a <strong>great</strong><br />

mountain, <strong>and</strong> at last he came to a large lake.<br />

His magical power warned him that here he<br />

would find many of <strong>the</strong> evil people. And as<br />

he looked out over <strong>the</strong> lake, a flock of wild geese<br />

rose from <strong>the</strong> shore <strong>and</strong> mounted high in <strong>the</strong><br />

air.<br />

Then Pulowech called his magical power to<br />

help him, <strong>and</strong> quickly shot one arrow after an<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r at <strong>the</strong> wild geese. They fell, one by one,<br />

at his feet, until <strong>the</strong> entire flock had been killed.<br />

He tied <strong>the</strong>m toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> carried <strong>the</strong>m over<br />

his shoulder.<br />

As Pulowech went over <strong>the</strong> high mountain,<br />

he knew that his <strong>great</strong>est trial was yet to <strong>com</strong>e,<br />

<strong>and</strong> he kept away from him all feelings of anger<br />

<strong>and</strong> disquiet ;<br />

for he well knew that his strength<br />

depended upon his quiet <strong>and</strong> peace of mind.<br />

Travelling in this way, he at last saw a wigwam<br />

in <strong>the</strong> distance, <strong>and</strong> his magical power warned<br />
