son?&quot; <strong>the</strong> old<br />

woman asked.<br />

&quot;I am seeking <strong>Glooscap</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Great Chief,<br />

said Kitpooseagunow.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r was making <strong>the</strong><br />

canoe, Kitpooseagunow formed a tiny bow from<br />

a small branch of a fir tree, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n he asked<br />

<strong>the</strong> old woman for a hair from her head. This<br />

hair was for <strong>the</strong> bow-string, <strong>and</strong> Kitpooseagu<br />

now knew that it would have magical power.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs started out in<br />

<strong>the</strong> canoe. As <strong>the</strong>y went down <strong>the</strong> river,<br />

Kitpooseagunow kept a close watch for sor<br />

cerers <strong>and</strong> magicians, who could assume any<br />

form <strong>the</strong>y chose. For he knew <strong>the</strong>y would be<br />

watching for him to destroy him.<br />

Once, at a turn in <strong>the</strong> river, <strong>the</strong>y saw a huge<br />

giant, st<strong>and</strong>ing on <strong>the</strong> bank, br<strong>and</strong>ishing his<br />

spear. The giant pretended that he was look<br />

ing for fish; but in reality he was defending<br />

<strong>the</strong> pass against <strong>the</strong> Avenger, who was now<br />

entering his territory.<br />

Kitpooseagunow took <strong>the</strong> tiny bow <strong>and</strong> aimed<br />

<strong>the</strong> arrow at <strong>the</strong> monster. The magical power<br />

of <strong>the</strong> arrow was so <strong>great</strong> that it sent <strong>the</strong> giant<br />

with a <strong>great</strong> leap to <strong>the</strong> opposite shore, where<br />

he fell dead.<br />

A little far<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong>y came to a weir, that
