MAN<br />

upon a time an Indian maiden<br />

ONCE dwelt alone in a large forest. She was<br />

often very lonely, <strong>and</strong> wished that she had a<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r or a sister to live with her.<br />

One day, when she was ga<strong>the</strong>ring fuel, she<br />

found a long, slim branch from <strong>the</strong> Mimkudawok<br />

tree, <strong>and</strong> carried it home with her. She<br />

left it leaning against <strong>the</strong> wigwam, outside <strong>the</strong><br />

door. That night she heard a human voice<br />
