WONDER TALES OF THE FOREST 101<br />

&quot;Let us hasten from here,&quot;<br />

he said;<br />

&quot;we are<br />

in danger. The Loon has just warned me.&quot;<br />

So <strong>the</strong> three stole out of <strong>the</strong> village in <strong>the</strong><br />

night, <strong>and</strong> were far away when it was found<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y had escaped.<br />

Soon after <strong>the</strong>y returned home, <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r died; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> sister<br />

<strong>and</strong> Kwemoo lived toge<strong>the</strong>r by <strong>the</strong> beautiful<br />

lake.<br />

will do all for you in my power, for seven<br />

&quot;I<br />

years,&quot;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Loon said. &quot;Then I must leave<br />

you, <strong>and</strong> return to my own people.&quot;<br />

Kwemoo kept his word. For seven years<br />

<strong>the</strong>y lived a quiet, happy life. It was so beau<br />

tiful <strong>the</strong>re that <strong>the</strong> wife wished to stay<br />

in that<br />

one place, <strong>and</strong> not move from place to place.<br />

So <strong>the</strong>y stayed until <strong>the</strong> seven years came to<br />

an end, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Loon said :<br />

&quot;I must leave you now <strong>and</strong> go to my own<br />

people.&quot;<br />

So he went back to his own people, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> sister were left alone by <strong>the</strong> lake.<br />

The third day after he had gone away, <strong>the</strong><br />

sister said:<br />

&quot;I feel sad <strong>and</strong> lonely.&quot; She went down to<br />

<strong>the</strong> water, <strong>and</strong> sat on a rock, <strong>and</strong> looked across<br />

<strong>the</strong> lake.<br />

In a little while some one touched her arm.<br />

She looked up, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re beside her was her<br />

husb<strong>and</strong>, Kwemoo.
