Megumoowesoo steered <strong>the</strong> sled. The two wiz<br />

ards followed, thinking that <strong>the</strong> strangers would<br />

soon fall from <strong>the</strong>ir sleds, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y could<br />

run over <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> crush <strong>the</strong>m to death.<br />

Down <strong>the</strong> mountain side <strong>the</strong>y went at a fear<br />

ful rate down, down, down <strong>the</strong> rough path<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> young man soon lost his balance <strong>and</strong><br />

fell from <strong>the</strong> sled. But <strong>the</strong> Megumoowesoo<br />

quickly caught him, <strong>and</strong> put him back in his<br />

place; <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> same time he turned a little<br />

aside <strong>and</strong> made <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs pass him. In an<br />

instant <strong>the</strong>y were again under way, <strong>and</strong> when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y reached <strong>the</strong> cliff, <strong>the</strong>ir sled made a <strong>great</strong><br />

bound <strong>and</strong> leaped far over <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. The<br />

Megumoowesoo shouted <strong>and</strong> sang as <strong>the</strong>y flew<br />

on; <strong>the</strong> sled thundered to <strong>the</strong> bottom of <strong>the</strong><br />

mountain; it sped on toward <strong>the</strong> village, with<br />

undiminished speed; it bounded through <strong>the</strong><br />

village until it struck <strong>the</strong> side of <strong>the</strong> old <strong>chief</strong> s<br />

wigwam, <strong>and</strong> tore it from end to end.<br />

The old <strong>chief</strong> sprang up in terror, <strong>and</strong> cried :<br />

&quot;This time I have lost my daughter!&quot;<br />

But he was not willing to admit himself<br />
