a dragon, <strong>and</strong> soon found a hole in <strong>the</strong> ground<br />

where one was hiding. He placed a stick of<br />

wood across <strong>the</strong> hole, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n he danced <strong>and</strong><br />

danced around <strong>the</strong> hole, singing to charm <strong>the</strong><br />

dragon out.<br />

In a little while <strong>the</strong> dragon s head appeared,<br />

<strong>and</strong> as he began to crawl out of <strong>the</strong> hole, he<br />

dropped his neck upon <strong>the</strong> log which <strong>the</strong><br />

Megumoowesoo had placed across <strong>the</strong> entrance.<br />

Then, with one blow of his hatchet, <strong>the</strong><br />

Megumoowesoo cut off <strong>the</strong> dragon s head, <strong>and</strong><br />

took it by its shining yellow horns, <strong>and</strong> placed<br />

it beside his sleeping <strong>com</strong>panion. Then he<br />

aroused him <strong>and</strong> said:<br />

Carry this dragon s head to <strong>the</strong> <strong>chief</strong>.&quot;<br />

The suitor did as <strong>the</strong> Megumoowesoo had<br />

told him, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> astonished old <strong>chief</strong> said:<br />

&quot;This time I shall lose my daughter.&quot;<br />

Then he said to <strong>the</strong> young man :<br />

&quot;I should like to see my new son-in-law coast<br />

down hill on a h<strong>and</strong>-sled.&quot;<br />

Now near <strong>the</strong> village <strong>the</strong>re was a high moun<br />

tain with steep, rugged sides ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> this was <strong>the</strong><br />

place <strong>the</strong> old <strong>chief</strong> chose for <strong>the</strong> coasting<br />

ground. He brought out two sleds, <strong>and</strong> gave<br />

one to <strong>the</strong> two strangers, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r to two<br />

Indians, who were wizards in <strong>the</strong> form of young<br />

men.<br />

The four Indians climbed <strong>the</strong> mountain to<br />

ge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> when all was ready, <strong>the</strong> Megu-
