Burrs, <strong>the</strong> Briers, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hornets <strong>and</strong> all<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r kinds of Insects with wings <strong>and</strong> stings,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y knew all <strong>the</strong> sharp-edged Flints of <strong>the</strong><br />

country, too.<br />

So, when <strong>the</strong> bower was built, it had in it for<br />

furniture: a hornet s nest for a bed, thorns<br />

for a carpet, sharp flints for a floor, <strong>and</strong> an<br />

ant s nest for a seat.<br />

Now it took <strong>the</strong> Badger until dark to untie <strong>the</strong><br />

hair-string, work as hard as he could. And he<br />

was so tired <strong>and</strong> hungry that <strong>the</strong> thought of <strong>the</strong><br />

warm wigwam pleased him. But he had no<br />

sooner entered than <strong>the</strong> thorns pierced his face,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> flints cut his feet, so that he howled<br />

with pain. Then he heard a voice which seemed<br />

to be that of <strong>the</strong> younger Weasel, crying:<br />

&quot;Go to my sister over <strong>the</strong>re.&quot; When he<br />

tried to go, he stepped into an ant hill, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

stinging <strong>the</strong>y gave him was worse than <strong>the</strong><br />

scratches of <strong>the</strong> Briers. Then near him he<br />

heard ano<strong>the</strong>r voice, which he thought was <strong>the</strong><br />

older Weasel, saying:<br />

Go to my sister over <strong>the</strong>re. When he tried<br />

to plunge through <strong>the</strong> darkness, not knowing<br />

where he was going, he fell upon <strong>the</strong> hornets<br />

nest <strong>and</strong> this was <strong>the</strong> worst of all.<br />

The Badger now saw that <strong>the</strong> Weasels were<br />

not in <strong>the</strong> wigwam at all, but were outside, ply<br />

ing <strong>the</strong>ir magic. He knew that he had been<br />

treated as he loved to treat o<strong>the</strong>r people. This
