BONDER TALES OF THE FOREST 63<br />

The Indian sat in <strong>the</strong> stern of <strong>the</strong> canoe ;<br />

his<br />

wife sat in <strong>the</strong> prow; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> dog sat in <strong>the</strong><br />

middle. The dog kept his ears <strong>and</strong> nose<br />

pointed in <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>the</strong>y were to go, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y glided so rapidly over <strong>the</strong> smooth water<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y were soon in sight of home. Their<br />

children saw <strong>the</strong>m nearing <strong>the</strong> shore, <strong>and</strong> ran<br />

down to meet <strong>the</strong>m, shouting for joy. And <strong>the</strong><br />

dog, as soon as he saw <strong>the</strong>m safely ashore,<br />

turned <strong>and</strong> ran home again, leaping <strong>and</strong> running<br />

over <strong>the</strong> water as though it were ice.<br />

Now this Indian, who had always been poor,<br />

began to see better days. When he let down his<br />

lines, <strong>the</strong> biggest fish came to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> thus in<br />

;<br />

every way he prospered. The time passed so<br />

quickly, <strong>and</strong> he was so busy, that before <strong>the</strong><br />

seven years had passed he had almost forgotten<br />

that he had ever been lost in <strong>the</strong> fog. But when<br />

<strong>the</strong> seven years were nearly ended, as he slept<br />

he began to have many dreams. In <strong>the</strong>m he<br />

went back to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> giants, <strong>and</strong> saw all<br />

those who had been so kind to him. And one<br />

night he dreamed that he was st<strong>and</strong>ing by his<br />

wigwam near <strong>the</strong> sea, <strong>and</strong> that a <strong>great</strong> whale<br />

swam up to him <strong>and</strong> began to sing <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ;<br />

sing<br />

ing was <strong>the</strong> sweetest that he had ever heard.<br />

Then he remembered that <strong>the</strong> giant had told<br />

him he would be reminded of him in seven years,<br />
