&quot;That is my canoe, said <strong>Glooscap</strong>.<br />

The two Indians stepped upon <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> it glided away by magical power. It<br />

carried <strong>the</strong>m straight out to sea, until <strong>the</strong>y<br />

came to a large isl<strong>and</strong>. They l<strong>and</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>re,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y set out in search of <strong>the</strong> people.<br />

Soon <strong>the</strong>y came upon a large Indian village,<br />

where <strong>the</strong>re was a <strong>chief</strong> who had a beautiful<br />

daughter. This <strong>chief</strong> was so wicked that he<br />

delighted in causing <strong>the</strong> death of all his daugh<br />

ter s suitors. He would give such impossible<br />

tasks that <strong>the</strong>y would be killed in attempting<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, or else <strong>the</strong>y would be put to death for<br />

failing.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> Megumoowesoo <strong>and</strong> his friend en<br />

tered <strong>the</strong> wigwam, <strong>the</strong>y were given <strong>the</strong> seat of<br />

honour; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Megumoowesoo<br />

told <strong>the</strong>ir err<strong>and</strong>.<br />

&quot;My friend is tired of living alone/ he said<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>chief</strong>. This meant, &quot;my<br />

friend would<br />

like to marry your daughter.<br />
