Then she ran away, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong> elder<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r came home, <strong>the</strong> young brave told him<br />

that had happened.<br />

The elder bro<strong>the</strong>r said:<br />

Truly, I should be glad to have some one<br />

here to take care of <strong>the</strong> wigwam for us.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>the</strong> beautiful maiden re<br />

turned as she had promised. When she heard<br />

that <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r would consent to her <strong>com</strong>ing<br />

to stay with <strong>the</strong>m she was very glad, <strong>and</strong> ran<br />

off again as if in <strong>great</strong> haste.<br />

At noon she returned, drawing a sled piled<br />

up with garments <strong>and</strong> arms, for she was a<br />

hunter ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> indeed, she could do all things, as<br />

few women could, whe<strong>the</strong>r it were cooking, or<br />

sewing, or making all that men need.<br />

So <strong>the</strong> spring passed pleasantly, until <strong>the</strong><br />

snow was gone; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n it was time for <strong>the</strong><br />

hunters to return home. Until <strong>the</strong> maiden<br />

came, <strong>the</strong>y had had but little luck in <strong>the</strong>ir hunt<br />

ing; but after that everything was changed,<br />

<strong>and</strong> now <strong>the</strong>y had a <strong>great</strong> supply of furs.<br />

One day <strong>the</strong>y started in <strong>the</strong>ir canoes down<br />

<strong>the</strong> river toward home. But as <strong>the</strong>y drew near<br />

to it, <strong>the</strong> maiden became sad. As <strong>the</strong>y came to<br />

a point of l<strong>and</strong>, she started <strong>and</strong> said:<br />

&quot;Here I must leave you. I can go no<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
