HOW GLOOSCAP WAS CONQUEEED

IN the long ago it came to pass, when Glooscap
had conquered all his enemies the Kewahqu
,
the giants and sorcerers, and the M teoulin,
magicians, and the Pamela, the evil spirit
of the night, and all kinds of ghosts, witches,
devils, cannibals, and goblins, he began to think
upon what he had done, and he wondered
whether his work on earth were finished.
And he spoke these thoughts to a woman,
who was clever and ready of tongue. But she
so fast, Master, for there yet re
replied, "Not
mains One whom no one has ever conquered,
nor got the better of in any way, and who will
remain unconquered to the end of time."
"And who is he?" asked the Master.
"It is the mighty Wasis," the woman re
plied ; "and there he sits. And I warn you that
if you meddle with him you will be in sore
trouble."
Now Wasis was the Baby! And he sat upon
the floor, sucking a piece of maple sugar,
greatly contented, troubling no one.
As the lord of Men and Beasts had never
