him that ano<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> wicked sorcerers was<br />

hiding <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

When he reached <strong>the</strong> place he entered <strong>the</strong><br />

wigwam. There before him sat a surly-look<br />

ing Indian, who did not ask him to take <strong>the</strong><br />

stranger s seat in <strong>the</strong> best part of <strong>the</strong> wigwam.<br />

For this Indian was one of <strong>the</strong> sorcerers, <strong>and</strong><br />

he hoped to make Pulowech angry <strong>and</strong> thus<br />

lessen his magical power. So Pulowech sat<br />

down on <strong>the</strong> mat nearest <strong>the</strong> door, <strong>and</strong> waited<br />

quietly for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r to speak.<br />

At last <strong>the</strong> sorcerer prepared some food,<br />

without saying a word, <strong>and</strong> divided it, giving a<br />

part to Pulowech. As Pulowech took <strong>the</strong> plate,<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Indian snatched it from him saying,<br />

&quot;Ah, no, I would ra<strong>the</strong>r give it to my dog!&quot;<br />

Pulowech did not be<strong>com</strong>e angry as <strong>the</strong><br />

sorcerer had hoped; he sat quietly just as if<br />

nothing unpleasant had happened. The sor<br />

cerer offered him food <strong>and</strong> took it away a<br />

second time ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> again Pulowech did not notice<br />

<strong>the</strong> insult, or be<strong>com</strong>e angry. Then <strong>the</strong> sorcerer<br />

asked rudely,<br />

&quot;Did<br />

you have any adventures<br />

on <strong>the</strong> way?&quot;<br />

&quot;Truly,<br />

indeed!&quot; Pulowech answered. &quot;I<br />

saw a man s leg sticking out of a cliff, <strong>and</strong> I<br />

cut it off, <strong>and</strong> went on. Then I came to a<br />

place where <strong>the</strong>re was a man s foot showing<br />

from a cliff, <strong>and</strong> I cut that off. And <strong>the</strong>n I<br />

came to a large lake near a <strong>great</strong> mountain,
