derful magical power of <strong>the</strong> old <strong>chief</strong>.<br />

Now <strong>the</strong> <strong>chief</strong> thought that his little<br />

might be finding life dull among <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

you tired of visiting with us?&quot; he<br />

asked.<br />

&quot;We have never been so merry,&quot; <strong>the</strong>y said,<br />

we cannot help being anxious about our<br />

old <strong>chief</strong>. &quot;To-morrow morning I will have<br />

In <strong>the</strong> morning, <strong>the</strong> canoe was brought down<br />

from <strong>the</strong> eaves, <strong>and</strong> was packed full of <strong>the</strong> finest<br />

fur <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> best meat. Then a small dog was<br />

put in, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>chief</strong> said,<br />

&quot;This dog will lead<br />

you safely home. Each of you must take a<br />

paddle <strong>and</strong> guide <strong>the</strong> canoe in <strong>the</strong> direction in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> dog sits looking.&quot; And <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />

giant <strong>chief</strong> said to <strong>the</strong> dog, &quot;And do you take<br />

good care of <strong>the</strong>se little people, <strong>and</strong> guide <strong>the</strong>m<br />

home.&quot;<br />

As <strong>the</strong> Indian <strong>and</strong> his wife entered <strong>the</strong> canoe,<br />

<strong>the</strong> old <strong>chief</strong> said,<br />

&quot;In seven years you will be<br />

reminded of me.&quot;
