After a while <strong>the</strong>y fell asleep, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

awoke in <strong>the</strong> morning, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> older sister<br />

stretched out her arm, which had been cramped<br />

in her sleep, she heard some one say &quot;Take<br />

care, you will upset my dish of war paint.&quot;<br />

She opened her eyes, <strong>and</strong> lo !<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing by her,<br />

she saw a noble fellow, his face adorned like<br />

an Indian <strong>chief</strong> s. He had <strong>great</strong>, shining eyes,<br />

which looked down at her kindly. It was <strong>the</strong><br />

very husb<strong>and</strong> of her choice. He had <strong>the</strong> very<br />

eyes she had seen as stars in <strong>the</strong> sky <strong>the</strong> night<br />

before !<br />

And <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> younger sister stretched out<br />

her arm, <strong>and</strong> she heard a low, squeaking voice<br />

say, &quot;Take care! You will upset my dish of<br />

eye-water.<br />

She looked up, <strong>and</strong> lo! by her side was <strong>the</strong><br />

man of her choice, with <strong>the</strong> little red eyes she<br />

had seen <strong>the</strong> night before. But <strong>the</strong>ir owner<br />

was a dwarfish, little old man with small, red,<br />

sore eyes. There was no help for it. What<br />

she had chosen she must have !<br />

Now <strong>the</strong>se husb<strong>and</strong>s were hunters, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were often away in <strong>the</strong> forest for whole days
