THE FOREST MAIDEN
IT was in the olden time, and two brothers
went hunting in the autumn, far up a
river, in the deep forest. And they built a
wigwam there, and remained all winter.
In the early spring their snow shoes and their
moccasins were worn and torn, and one night
they wished that a woman were there to mend
them.
The younger brave returned to the lodge the
next day before his brother, as usual, to pre
pare the evening meal when, what was his
astonishment to find that some one had been
there before him! Their garments were
mended; the lodge was clean; there was a
bright fire; and the kettle was boiling.
He said nothing about these wonderful things
to his brother that night.
The next night he came back at the same
time, and he found that some one had been
there again; and that all was ready for the
evening meal. Again he said nothing; but in
the morning, when he started out to hunt, he
went but a little way, and watched the door
from a hiding-place.
