danger on <strong>the</strong> way. When you have crossed<br />

<strong>the</strong> mountain, you will <strong>com</strong>e to ano<strong>the</strong>r forest.<br />

Follow <strong>the</strong> trail, <strong>and</strong> you will <strong>com</strong>e to a wide<br />

river that flows through a broad plain. Follow<br />

<strong>the</strong> river through <strong>the</strong> plain <strong>and</strong> it will lead you<br />

to<br />

<strong>the</strong> village where lives <strong>the</strong> maiden, whom I<br />

would have you seek for your wife. When<br />

you reach <strong>the</strong> village, do not go into <strong>the</strong> finest<br />

wigwam, but seek out <strong>the</strong> poorest. There an<br />

Indian lives with many beautiful daughters.<br />

The youngest is <strong>the</strong> fairest. Wed her.&quot;<br />

Mimkudawogoosk started upon his journey.<br />

He had travelled a few days, when one morning,<br />

in <strong>the</strong> forest, he heard his sister singing. She<br />

had be<strong>com</strong>e lonely without him, <strong>and</strong> had set<br />

out to follow him. To give him warning that<br />

she was <strong>com</strong>ing, she sang as she went along;<br />

it was a magical song, <strong>and</strong> he heard her al<br />

though far away.<br />

&quot;Keturn to your wigwam do not follow me<br />

do not follow me !&quot; he sang back to her. So<br />

she went back to <strong>the</strong> wigwam.<br />

Mimkudawogoosk went on, until he came to<br />

<strong>the</strong> mountain. He was climbing over a narrow,<br />

rocky way, when just before him, he saw <strong>the</strong><br />

giant serpents. He quickly held his bow like<br />

a leaping pole, <strong>and</strong> made a <strong>great</strong> leap. The<br />

bow carried him safely over, <strong>and</strong> he l<strong>and</strong>ed far
