72 GLOOSCAP AND OTHER STORIES<br />

it long before <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> told <strong>the</strong>m that<br />

now <strong>the</strong>y must hide.<br />

&quot;The terrible Chenoo is <strong>com</strong>ing, you must<br />

now hide yourself, he said. &quot; If<br />

you can live<br />

after hearing <strong>the</strong> first scream, you will not be<br />

harmed by her in any way. If you hear me call,<br />

My son, <strong>com</strong>e to my aid, bring with you<br />

<strong>the</strong> horn, <strong>and</strong> you may be able to save my<br />

life.&quot;<br />

They did as he directed. They hid in a deep<br />

hole which <strong>the</strong>y had dug in <strong>the</strong> ground. They<br />

covered <strong>the</strong>ir ears; but all at once <strong>the</strong> cry of<br />

<strong>the</strong> foe burst upon <strong>the</strong>m like terrible thunder,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ears rang with pain. In spite of all<br />

<strong>the</strong> care <strong>the</strong>y had taken, <strong>the</strong>y were nearly<br />

killed; but soon <strong>the</strong>y heard <strong>the</strong> answering cry<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir friend, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y knew that <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

safe.<br />

Then <strong>the</strong> battle began. The Chenoos, whose<br />

magic was aroused to its <strong>great</strong>est power,<br />

swelled to <strong>the</strong> size of mountains. The tall<br />

pines were torn up by <strong>the</strong> roots, <strong>and</strong> rocks were<br />

hurled, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fight was terrible. At last <strong>the</strong><br />

man in <strong>the</strong> cave heard <strong>the</strong> Chenoo calling<br />

:<br />

*<br />

My son-in-law ! Come <strong>and</strong> help me !<br />

He climbed out of his hiding place, <strong>and</strong> ran<br />

to his friend.<br />

The old Chenoo was struggling upon <strong>the</strong><br />

ground, in <strong>the</strong> power of his enemy, who was<br />

trying to thrust her dragon s horn into his ear.
