.WONDER TALES OF THE FOREST 99<br />

The next night, sure enough, <strong>the</strong>y heard <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>great</strong> shout of <strong>the</strong> giant, as he rushed into <strong>the</strong><br />

village. They hid in <strong>the</strong> lake until morning, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> Loon had told <strong>the</strong>m to do. They could hear<br />

<strong>the</strong> screams <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> noise while <strong>the</strong> terrible<br />

giant was destroying <strong>the</strong> village.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> village was destroyed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> giant<br />

had gone away, <strong>the</strong>y went back to where <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

old home had been. But <strong>the</strong>y liked <strong>the</strong> new<br />

lodge so much better, that <strong>the</strong>y never moved<br />

back to <strong>the</strong> village.<br />

Day by day <strong>the</strong> two children <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Loon<br />

were toge<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> rocks by <strong>the</strong> lake. The<br />

Loon taught <strong>the</strong> boy how to be a swift runner ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> how to walk on <strong>the</strong> water as <strong>the</strong> Loons do ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n he taught him how to fly in <strong>the</strong> air,<br />

so that he could hunt in all <strong>the</strong>se ways. Then<br />

<strong>the</strong> Loon said:<br />

&quot;Now<br />

your family will never be in want of<br />

food; but, if you should ever need my help, I<br />

will <strong>com</strong>e to you.&quot;<br />

Now, years had passed away, since <strong>the</strong> day<br />

when <strong>the</strong> little Indian girl had walked on <strong>the</strong><br />

shore in her robe of bright leaves. She was<br />

now a beautiful maiden. She was alone one<br />

day by <strong>the</strong> water, when <strong>the</strong> Loon came to her,<br />

<strong>and</strong> asked her to be his wife.<br />

&quot;Mogwaa no,&quot;<br />

she said.<br />

But when she went home, she told her mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

what <strong>the</strong> Loon had said.
