Oochigeaskw trimmed <strong>the</strong> moccasins <strong>and</strong><br />

skirt <strong>and</strong> coat with <strong>the</strong> shells, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n she<br />

wound strings of <strong>the</strong>m about her head. She<br />

had no beautiful braids to be adorned with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> she was so ashamed. But she<br />

started out bravely in search of Team, <strong>the</strong> won<br />

derful hunter.<br />

When her sisters<br />

saw her going away <strong>the</strong>y<br />

cried :<br />

Where are you going!<br />

Come back, you lit<br />

tle scarred one !<br />

But Oochigeaskw was afraid of <strong>the</strong>m no<br />

longer.<br />

&quot;I<br />

will not go back to you, <strong>and</strong> I am going to<br />

<strong>the</strong> lodge of Team,&quot;<br />

she called out.<br />

As she passed through <strong>the</strong> village, <strong>the</strong> chil<br />

dren threw stones at her, shouting:<br />

&quot;Oochigeaskw, Oochigeaskw! Go back! Go<br />

back! 1<br />

Some of <strong>the</strong> stones struck her <strong>and</strong> hurt her,<br />

but she kept on. Even <strong>the</strong> men <strong>and</strong> women<br />

laughed at her, pointing at her <strong>and</strong> calling :<br />

&quot;Oochigeaskw! Oh, Oochigeaskw, little<br />

scarred one! Go back! Go back!&quot;<br />

But, at last Oochigeaskw reached <strong>the</strong> lodge of<br />

Team. The sister greeted her kindly, <strong>and</strong> at<br />

sunset <strong>the</strong> two went down to <strong>the</strong> shore. Away<br />

in <strong>the</strong> distance sounded <strong>the</strong> faint dip, dip of<br />

a paddle. The two maidens stood with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s shading <strong>the</strong>ir eyes, looking in <strong>the</strong> direc-
