PSD has rise time in the range <strong>of</strong> 1–2 µs. Its spectral response is approximately<br />

from 320 to 1100 nm; that is, the PSD covers the ultraviolet (UV), visible, and nearinfrared<br />

spectral ranges. Small-area one-dimensional PSDs have sensitive surfaces<br />

ranging from 1 × 2to1× 12 mm, whereas the large-area two-dimensional <strong>sensors</strong><br />

have square areas with a side ranging from 4 to 27 mm.<br />

7.6 Ultrasonic Sensors<br />

For noncontact distance measurements, an active sensor which transmits some kind<br />

<strong>of</strong> a pilot signal and receives a reflected signal can be designed. The transmitted<br />

energy may be in the form <strong>of</strong> any radiation—for instance, electromagnetic in the
