Using MonitorMagic Snmp trap monitor - Overview The Snmp trap monitor allows you to receive SNMP traps with the MonitorMagic service. These traps can be generated by any host that is capable of sending SNMP traps. Once a SNMP trap is received, the MonitorMagic service can apply rules and execute alarm actions. Each MonitorMagic service can only have a single Snmp trap monitor that processes the traps received. The monitor can have multiple rules and alarm actions defined. The rules defined for the Snmp trap monitor can be used to execute different alarm actions for SNMP traps originating from different hosts. The MonitorMagic service cooperates with the Microsoft's SNMP service and SNMP trap service and requires these components to be installed and running. See MonitorMagic SNMP requirements for more information. Principle of operation A host fires (sends) a SNMP trap to the computer that runs the MonitorMagic service. For the remote host, the computer that runs the MonitorMagic service is identifier by the (TCP/IP) address of the computer. The MonitorMagic service receives the trap and processes the trap according to the rules and alarm actions defined for the Snmp trap monitor Alarm actions can be executed by the MonitorMagic service, based on the content, originating host or other parameters of the trap. Scheduling For the Snmp trap monitor, the scheduling parameters are ignored. When the Snmp trap monitor is configured for the MonitorMagic service, the MonitorMagic service will process the monitor immediately when a new trap is received, regardless of the configured scheduling parameters.
