Single versus multiple MonitorMagic services
With MonitorMagic you can monitor network objects like disks, event logs, performance counters
and so on. These objects are monitored by the MonitorMagic service. The MonitorMagic service
resides on a computer and is able to monitor local and remote objects.
Example: Suppose you have installed the MonitorMagic service on computer A. The
MonitorMagic service on computer A is checking a number of monitors of computer A, for
instance all the disks, event logs and some performance counters of computer A. Now you also
want to monitor something of computer B. You now have the following options:
Install the MonitorMagic service on computer B and let the new service maintain the
monitors of computer B.
Do not install the MonitorMagic service on computer B and let the MonitorMagic service
on computer A monitor the objects of computer B.
With MonitorMagic you can choose from various scenario's regarding the distribution and
configuration of MonitorMagic services in your network environment:
MonitoringMagic service scenario: Single service with remote monitoring
In this scenario, only one MonitorMagic service is installed. The single MonitorMagic service
monitors all objects on local and remote computers. Since the MonitorMagic service is installed
only on one computer you don't need to install the MonitorMagic service on each monitored
computer. A disadvantage of this method is network traffic: Since you are monitoring remote
objects, all object information is transported over the network. This method is recommended if
you monitor objects on moderate frequencies (every minute-hour) only, or when it is not possible
or allowed to install and configure the MonitorMagic service on each computer.
Advantages:
Single MonitorMagic service installation and configuration.
Simple planning, implementation and maintenance of monitoring software.
Disadvantages:
Single point of failure
Monitoring may fail if network errors occur
MonitorMagic service scenario: Multiple service with local monitoring
In this scenario the MonitorMagic service is installed on each computer containing objects that
must be monitored. With the MonitorMagic client it is possible to install multiple MonitorMagic
services at one time. The biggest advantage of this method is the fact that monitoring takes place
at the same location as the monitored object. This minimizes the network load: Since each
monitored object is monitored by the MonitorMagic service running on the same computer, there
is no network traffic involved. A disadvantage of this method is the required installation and
configuration of the MonitorMagic service on each monitored computer. This method is
recommended if you monitor objects at high frequencies (every minute).

Accurate monitoring: Monitoring takes place at the same location as the objects
