MonitorMagic Policy Change Event This event monitor contains rules to filter the event log for specific events. You can add a custom alarm actions to these rules. You can present this information in any way you like. The reporting process is as follows: A. The MonitorMagic service collects the data from the computers according to a report profile (at a in the report profile defined time) B. The MonitorMagic service saves the data into the database tables. C. After that the information can be retrieved from the database to create the report. 166
Using MonitorMagic In the menu option Configure report data collection you can define which information is stored in the database and which information will be retrieved: history data, specific logs (application, system, security). The user can define when the information must be collected and how and when it must be stored in the database. You can create a report for the computers or types of computers (mail server, workstation, file&print server) in your network or domain. The basic steps to generate a report are: 1. Install MonitorMagic (you probably already did that), see Setup MonitorMagic. 2. Install and configure the MonitorMagic Service, see configuring the MonitorMagic service. 3. Create and configure a database for storage. See Database - Introduction. 3. Configure MonitorMagic so that data is stored in the database. 4. Select menu item Report - Configure Report Data Collection from the menu. Create a report profile in which the data collection is defined. Specify the information you want to collect, the time you want to collect it and the computers you want to collect it for. 5. In the report tree, on the left of your window, you will see the available report templates. Open one of the predefined report templates. Generate a report, select report - generate report from the menu. The report will be presented. A report profile specifies the following: the type of report data that must be collected, e.g. event log, services status information, performance counters. the computer(s) for which the data must be collected according to the report profile. when the data must be collected. In a network often there are a number of computers with the same role, e.g. there are file and print servers, mail servers, workstations. For computers with the same role you would like to generate reports with the same contents and the same layout. Report profiles are created to do that. In report profiles the contents en layout of the report are defined. For Monitor data you can create a different type of report than for the event log data. Report profiles are maintained and stored by the MonitorMagic service. Each MonitorMagic service can have different report profiles. To manage a report profile, you must be connected to the MonitorMagic service that maintains the report profile. So a single MonitorMagic service can collect, maintain and store report data for many computers. The same MonitorMagic service can use different report profiles. To collect report data from a computer, you do not need to run the MonitorMagic service on that computer. So all reports can be managed from one computer and only on that computer you need to run the MonitorMagic service. 167
