ART 433 – Video Art (4)<br />

Prerequisite: Junior standing or instructor permission. In this studio<br />

students will use digital technology to create and analyze video art with an<br />

emphasis on personal expression and experimentation. Students will become<br />

familiar with historic and contemporary video art practice through screenings<br />

and class discussions. Students will explore basic editing software techniques in<br />

order to produce individual creative projects.<br />

in this class will collaborate with each other and with the public, both on and off<br />

campus, as participants in the process of creating art experiences.<br />

Due to the social nature of this work, the class also focuses on how service<br />

art practices. Service learning is a pedagogical practice that allows students to<br />

learn a subject outside of the classroom, through active community engagement,<br />

usually in “service” to a group or charity organization that needs help. The<br />

combination of service learning and relational/socially engaged art allows<br />

students to act as whole citizens–students, artists, individuals and community<br />

members–all at once, while also strengthening or creating new ties between the<br />

college and the local community.<br />

A large part of the learning in this course takes place through group<br />

collaboration and negotiation. Most of the projects in this course are not selfdirected<br />

and yet each student must bear responsibility for the artistic success<br />

of each project. Participation is also key in the success of each class member’s<br />

ability to learn from the projects, readings, and discussions, and in their ability<br />

to share this knowledge with the communities–participants and viewers–that<br />

we encounter.<br />

ART 435 – Interactive Design Studio (4)<br />
