COM 101 – Speech Communication (3)<br />

An introduction to speech communication with special emphasis on the<br />

practical skills of public speaking. Learning objectives include civility and<br />

listening skills, planning and preparing a message, putting information into oral<br />

<br />

COM 208 – Introduction to Media (3)<br />

This is an introductory course on Mass Communication in the United States<br />

today. It examines the historical, economic, technological, political, and legal<br />

<br />

Students closely examine the news, public relations, broadcasting, advertising,<br />

and entertainment industries.<br />

COM 212 – Interpersonal Communication (3)<br />

This course examines many aspects of interpersonal communication<br />

including perceptions, listening, nonverbal communication, group dynamics, and<br />

leadership. It will also look at family and romantic relationships. At the end of the<br />

course the student should be able to recognize critical communication moments.<br />

COM 213 – Media Literacy (3)<br />

Prerequisites: COM 208. This course introduces students to the critical<br />

thinking skills used when interpreting media messages and their impact. Using<br />

digital media as a model, students will understand how the structure, frameworks,<br />

and elements of media shapes these messages, as well as analyze cognitive,<br />

emotional, and social reactions to such messages.<br />

COM 216 – Film History (3)<br />

Prerequisites: COM 208 and COM 213. This course presents an introduction<br />

important for technological, aesthetic, social and economic reasons. Students<br />

Students will also learn about the origins and development of cinema, major<br />

COM 218WI – Visual Culture (3)<br />

An introduction to the complex power and beauty of visual culture through<br />

the exploration of various modes of image creation and interpretation. A focus<br />

is placed on cultivating an informed and critically engaged viewer in order to<br />

empower and enrich individual visual experience by exploring connections<br />

<br />
