POS 335 – Contemporary Issues in Latin America (3)<br />

An interdisciplinary approach to analyzing major political, economic, and<br />

social issues in Latin America today. <br />

POS 337 – Latin America and the United States (3)<br />

Description and analysis of the events, institutions, and issues that have dominated<br />

the relations of Latin America with the United States throughout the years. Emphasis<br />

on current diplomatic trends. This course is cross-listed as LAS 337 and HIS 337.<br />

POS 339 – The Congress (3)<br />

This course is a comprehensive examination of one of the most powerful<br />

legislative bodies in the world, the United States Congress. Students will<br />

understand the inner workings of the House of Representatives and the Senate.<br />

An emphasis will be placed on the internal dynamics of congressional politics.<br />

POLITICAL SCIENCE<br />

POS 340 – Selected Topics (1-6)<br />

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Directed and guided program of<br />

reading and discussion concerning selected topics in political theory.<br />

POS 341 – Constitutional Law I (3)<br />

An examination of the unique role of the Supreme Court in the U.S.<br />

constitutional system, focusing on the evolution of the constitutional system as<br />

revealed in the major decisions of the Supreme Court. The course provides both<br />

an introduction to American political thought and an intensive examination of<br />

the functions of major institutions within the constitutional system.<br />

POS 342 – Constitutional Law II (3)<br />

This course will examine in some detail the role of the Supreme Court in<br />

American politics. Careful consideration is given to the place of civil rights and<br />

are analyzed and synthesized.<br />

POS 343 – Campaigns and Elections (3)<br />

This will be an interactive course with students required to take part in discussions<br />

and debates about the election process. The class will be divided into three political<br />

parties, with each party selecting a presidential candidate and campaign advisors.<br />

Through this process, students will learn how to run an effective political campaign.<br />

POS 351 – Global Environmental Politics (3)<br />

This course provides students with a foundational understanding of the<br />

environmental challenges facing the world today; fundamentally, the course<br />

addresses three major questions: How did we get to where we are now? Where<br />

are we now? Where are we likely to go from here? Additionally however, there<br />

is an underlying question that will permeate the course curriculum throughout–<br />

why should we care?
