ENG 332 – Great Works of Western Literature (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. Study of classic and contemporary works<br />

that have become an essential part of Western culture. May include works (in<br />

translation) by such writers as Dante, Cervantes, Machiavelli, Voltaire, Goethe,<br />

Flaubert, Dostoevsky, Camus, and Sartre, as well as works by selected English and<br />

American writers.<br />

ENG 333 – Postcolonial Literature (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. This class is an introduction to<br />

postcolonial literature as a critical/theoretical approach, as well as a survey of<br />

of cultural identity such as gender, race, class, and sex/sexuality. There will also<br />

<br />

Edward Said, Chinua Achebe, and Homi Bhabba. Selected literary texts may come<br />

from a variety of postcolonial contexts from the late-19th century to the present,<br />

including Africa, India, the Caribbean, Ireland, and elsewhere.<br />

ENG 334 – Mythology (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. This course offers an overview of a variety of<br />

myth texts. Paired with literature based upon or reinventing these myths, such study<br />

will provide students with both a mythological background which will enhance their<br />

readings of subsequent literature which draws upon a rich mythic pool (Medieval,<br />

Renaissance, Romantic, Contemporary, etc.) with an on-going analysis of their use by<br />

authors from a variety of genres, literary periods and cultures.<br />

ENG 340 – Selected Topics (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. A specialized course offering, which will<br />

include emphasis on close analysis of literature or language.<br />

ENG 341 – Literary Criticism (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Junior standing. Study of the theoretical frameworks which can be<br />

applied to literature, such as new criticism, Marxism, feminism, deconstruction, new<br />

historicism, psychoanalytic criticism, postcolonial criticism, and cultural criticism.<br />

ENG 345 – Film Literature (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. <br />
