labor force and movement. Issues addressed include an analysis of the unique<br />

characteristics of the labor market; history and role of the organized labor<br />

movement; market forces determining wage rates and hours expended; collective<br />

bargaining; labor mobility; and regulation of the labor market.<br />

ECO 391, 392, 393 – Independent Study (1-6, 1-6, 1-6)<br />

Study in a special area of student interest, subject to departmental approval<br />

and supervision. This course is graded on a letter grade system.<br />

ECO 415 – History of Economic Thought and Systems (3)<br />

Prerequisites: ECO 201 and ECO 202. A detailed examination of the origins<br />

of economic analysis beginning with the ancient Egyptians and continuing<br />

through to modern approaches. There is particular emphasis on the Classical<br />

period. Offered spring semesters.<br />

ECO 417 – Sociological Applications of Economics (3)<br />

Prerequisites: ECO 201 and ECO 202. A study of different aspects of family<br />

life as viewed through microeconomic principles. Coverage includes the division<br />

of labor in households, marriage markets, the demand function for children, and<br />

altruism within the family.<br />

ECO 420 – Managerial Economics (3)<br />

223. Students learn how to solve business problems and gain competitive<br />

advantage by combining microeconomic theory and powerful quantitative<br />

methods. Topics include forecasting consumer demand using linear regression,<br />

production and cost analysis, optimal pricing and production decisions, and<br />

capital budgeting.<br />

ECO 430 – Health Economics (3)<br />

Prerequisites: ECO 201 and ECO 202. Microeconomic theory is used to<br />

understand the operation of health care markets and the behavior of participants<br />

(consumers, insurers, physicians, and hospitals) in health care industries.<br />

International comparisons are made and the role of the public sector is investigated.<br />

ECO 440 – Selected Topics (3)<br />

Prerequisites: ECO 201 and ECO 202. An in-depth examination of a topic in<br />

economics which is not covered in existing courses.<br />

ECO 450 – Econometrics (3)<br />

Prerequisites: ECO 201, ECO 202, MAT 201, MAT 223. An introduction<br />

to testing economic hypotheses using statistical methods. Topics will include<br />

hypothesis testing, single-variable and multivariate linear regression,<br />

introductory nonlinear regression, and pitfalls in regression. Students will use a<br />

computer-based statistical package to practice techniques learned in class, and<br />

will also present a course project based on the use of these techniques.
