RELIGION<br />

The Liberal Arts curriculum prepares students for careers in a wide range of<br />

the nature of religious knowledge and belief; mysticism; the relations between<br />

religion and morality; the language of religion; and the relation between man<br />

and God. This course is cross-listed as PHI 317.<br />

REL 321 – The Apocalypse in Scripture and Society (3)<br />

The apocalyptic vision has shaped the religious, political, and cultural<br />

landscape of the Western world. This course will examine the origins of<br />

apocalyptic thought in the Middle East and trace the subsequent development<br />

of apocalyptic themes in the Early Christian and Medieval worlds. Apocalyptic<br />

imagery in modern and contemporary cinema, religious movements, and<br />

political ideologies will also be highlighted.<br />

REL 325WI – Islam and Politics (3)<br />

What is Islam? What do people who call themselves Muslims believe, and<br />

what is the particular dynamic of their ethics and politics at this moment in<br />

time? These questions and others will be addressed in this course, which in the<br />

<br />

opportunity to read the Koran, and respond to some critical questions regarding<br />

the Muslim faith. In the second half of the course, important Islamic countries<br />

such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the Palestinians, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and<br />

Pakistan will be examined.
