EDU 481 – Internship (12)<br />

Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Education Department, approval of<br />

Intern Application, and passage of all FTCE’s required for major. Student<br />

teaching requires one full semester of the student’s senior year. No other<br />

courses may be taken during the internship without special permission of the<br />

Department. Elementary Education majors with a concentration in Exceptional<br />

Student Education or Deaf Education will intern in both specialization areas.<br />

Professional Education <strong>Course</strong>s, Special Conditions<br />

<br />

EDU 480 – Intern Supervision (3)<br />

A course designated for district teachers who supervise <strong>Flagler</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

Education interns.<br />

EDU 491, 492, 493 – Independent Studies (3, 3, 3)<br />

Independent or directed study on a subject chosen and outlined by the advanced<br />

student with the approval of the instructor and the Department Chairperson. The<br />

study should involve considerable research and may include practical experience<br />

with students. This course is graded on a letter grade system.<br />

Elementary Education* (EEL)<br />

The following courses, with the exception of EEL 363, are required for all<br />

Elementary Education majors. This major is designed for the student whose primary<br />

interest is teaching in the elementary classroom, grades kindergarten to sixth.<br />

EEL 301 – Elementary Reading Instruction (3)<br />

Prerequisite: EDU 202. This course will provide students with an<br />

understanding of the reading process, beginning reading instruction, and<br />

teaching reading across the content areas for the primary and intermediate<br />

grades. <br />

EEL 302 – Children’s Literature: Reading Across the Content Areas (3)<br />

Prerequisite: EDU 202. Students will be immersed in a variety of quality children’s<br />

<br />

and techniques designed to facilitate reading comprehension across the content areas<br />

will be covered in this course. Service learning requirement is included.<br />

Elementary Methods <strong>Course</strong>s: The following courses in methods of teaching<br />

various subject areas in the elementary school are required of Elementary<br />

Education majors. Content in each methods class will include instruction on<br />

teaching the common core state standards and Florida’s Next Generation<br />

Sunshine State Standards.
