COM 440 - Selected Topics (3)<br />

Prerequisites: Junior standing and COM major or minor or permission of<br />

instructor. Each separate course may be substituted for one elective in the<br />

communication curriculum. These course are offered as enrichment courses.<br />

COM 452 - Advanced Reporting I (4)<br />

(equivalent to COM 451)<br />

This is an advanced class in print news. Students<br />

write and report for print under tight deadlines, apply news judgment and ethics<br />

and learn to apply knowledge of news to the structure, environment and context<br />

of a print newsroom. The course will give students hands-on experience in story<br />

selection, interviewing, researching and writing.<br />

COMMUNICATION<br />

COM 453 - Advanced Reporting II (4)<br />

(equivalent to COM 451)<br />

This is an advanced class in television news. Students<br />

write and report under tight deadlines, apply news judgment and ethics and<br />

learn to apply knowledge of news to the structure, environment and context<br />

of a TV newsroom. The course will give students hands-on experience in story<br />

selection, interviewing, researching, writing and production. Students will learn<br />

hands-on training in how TV news is shot, edited and produced.<br />

COM 462 – PR/Strategic Communication Case Analysis (3)<br />

Prerequisites: COM 224 Foundations of PR/Strategic Communication and<br />

A course focusing on the comprehension and application<br />

of the concepts of organizational rhetoric to cases where strategic messages are<br />

conveyed to stakeholders. The central aim of the course is for students to develop<br />

<br />

that they understand the impact and consequences of strategic communication.<br />

COM 463 – PR/ Strategic Communication Campaigns (3)<br />

Prerequisite: COM 311. Using the principles and techniques of public relations<br />

to analyze case studies and to create strategies and campaigns. <strong>Course</strong> includes<br />

<br />

campaign. Includes use of desktop publishing and an introduction to public relations<br />

in cyberspace.<br />

COM 464 - Portfolio for PR/Strategic Communication (1)<br />

Strategic communication majors who have accrued 75 or more hours in the<br />

major may take this course. It requires the preparation of an electronic portfolio<br />

<br />

strategic communication majors. The portfolio must be acceptable to a majority
