Prerequisite: COM 208. The types, techniques and the ethics of propaganda will<br />

be examined in this course. The practice of propaganda will be explored through the<br />

following three questions: how does propaganda create belief, how does it lead us to<br />

maintain our beliefs, and how does it convince us to change our beliefs?<br />

COM 340 – Selected Topics (3)<br />

Prerequisites: Junior standing and Communication major or minor or<br />

permission of instructor. Each separate course may be substituted for one elective<br />

in the communication curriculum. These courses are offered as enrichment courses.<br />

photojournalism, camera techniques and photo editing, all important and useful<br />

skills at a time when media organizations and websites increasingly rely on<br />

visual art and photography to tell stories and provide insight.<br />

COM 353 - Reporting II (4)<br />

(equivalent to COM 351)<br />

This course explores the fundamentals of<br />

investigative reporting. You will learn how to bring more meaning and context<br />

to your stories. Even as the value of wire stories and other so-called commodity<br />

news drops, deep-context reporting is valued in today’s highly competitive<br />

media environment. You will learn how to use documents, online resources,<br />

and interviews with primary sources to improve your reporting and boost the<br />

credibility and accuracy of your stories.
