A course in sign language studies (SLS 201 or SLS 202 – Sign Language I<br />

or II for the Non-Major) is offered every semester. These courses are designed<br />

for students enrolled in majors other than Education of the Deaf and Hard of<br />

Hearing who would like to learn basic sign language skills.<br />

EDD 344 – Introduction to American Sign Language (3)<br />

EDD 345 – Basic American Sign Language (3)<br />

EDD 346 – Intermediate American Sign Language (3)<br />

EDD 347 – Advanced American Sign Language (3)<br />

EDD 348 – Simultaneous Communication (3)<br />

Upon completion of the sign language courses and prior to the Internship<br />

semester, students enrolled in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing<br />

program must successfully pass a Sign Language Competency Test. If a student is<br />

unable to pass the Sign Language Competency Test, he/she will not be permitted<br />

to intern with deaf or hard-of-hearing students.<br />

EDD 349 – Foundations of Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (3)<br />

. Philosophical approaches<br />

to education of the deaf and hard of hearing, psychological characteristics of<br />

deaf and hard of hearing populations, social adaptation of the deaf and hard<br />

of hearing will be discussed. History of the education of the deaf and hard of<br />

hearing will be reviewed. Participation in a 30-hour practicum is required.<br />

EDD 360 – Hearing Science (3)<br />

Corequisite: Enrollment in EDD 349. The purpose of this course is to<br />

provide information on the assessment of audition and the determination of<br />

auditory training goals and intervention strategies for assisting deaf students in<br />

maximizing use of their residual hearing. Offered fall semesters.<br />

EDD 362 – Speech Science (3)<br />

The purpose of this course is to provide information<br />

on approaches that can be used to determine goals and intervention strategies for<br />

developing the speech skills of deaf students based on phonetic and functional<br />

assessments. Offered spring semesters.<br />

EDD 370 – Reading/Emergent Literacy (3)<br />

Prerequisite: EDD 349. The purpose of this course is the study of the<br />

development of language skills in young deaf children (birth to grade 3) and<br />

the patterns of instruction, interaction, and experience which facilitate that<br />

development. Particular attention will be given to experiential and mediated<br />

learning models.
