Men who had an HIV-infected primary female partner were significantlymore likely to be HIV-infected compared to men whose primary female partner was HIVuninfected.The prevalence of HIV among uncircumcised men with an HIV-infectedprimary female partner was substantial at 79.3%.HIV prevalence among married and cohabiting men varied significantly by their circumcision statusand by the HIV status of their female primary sexual partner. Among uncircumcised men whoseprimary partner was HIV‐infected, 79.3% were also HIV‐infected. In comparison, 44.8% ofcircumcised men with an infected primary partner were also HIV‐infected. Men whose primary femalepartners were HIV‐uninfected had much lower rates of HIV infection, though HIV prevalence was stillhigh at 10.3% among uncircumcised men.KAIS 2007 114
6.7. Gaps and unmet needs• Few multiple partnerships were reported, and the extent of theirconcurrency is not well known. A better understanding of the role ofconcurrency in the HIV epidemic is necessary to determine whetherinterventions targeting multiple concurrent partnerships may be importantfor prevention.• The relationship between age of sexual debut and HIV infection appearscomplex; more information is needed on this topic.• Encouraging partner testing and condom use among persons with multiplepartners and partners of unknown HIV status remains a challenge and apriority.• Areas with low levels of male circumcision may need culturally sensitiveways to increase acceptability and uptake of this prevention method alongwith other safer sex behaviours.KAIS 2007 115
