Figure 13.3b Prevalence of syphilis among women and men aged 15-64 years by five-yearage group, Kenya 2007.Syphilis Prevalence (Weighted %)86420Women Men6.05.03.84.03.42.42.7 2.82.82.42.52.21.50.880.791.21.01.91.70.480.370.4315-19 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-44 45-49 50-54 55-59 60-64 TotalAge Group (Years)Figure 13.3b The prevalence of syphilis was highest among older men (aged 50-64years) and lowest among youth (aged 15-24 years).Differences in the prevalence of syphilis between women and men were not statisticallysignificant among younger and middle‐aged adults from 15‐49 years of age. Among those aged50‐64 years, the higher rates of syphilis among men compared to women were marginallysignificant. The distribution for syphilis in the 2007 KAIS by sex was different from patterns of HIV and HSV‐2; as shown in Chapters 2 and 12, women had a significantly greater burden of both HIV andHSV‐2.Table 13.3a HIV and HSV-2 prevalence among women and men aged 15-64 years, Kenya2007.Women Men TotalHIV8.4 5.4 7.1HSV-2 41.7 26.3 35.1The distribution of syphilis by age was also different compared to HIV and HSV‐2. For HIV,prevalence was highest in the middle‐aged groups and lowest among both the youngest andoldest age groups. For HSV‐2, prevalence rates appeared to peak in middle‐aged groups andleveled off thereafter. Given that syphilis is treatable while infection with HIV or HSV‐2 ischronic, these different patterns of distribution are expected. The prevalence of syphilis wassimilar in rural and urban areas at 1.4% and 1.9%, respectively. This pattern was similar for bothwomen (1.2% urban; 1.9% rural) and men (1.7% urban; 1.9% rural).KAIS 2007 231
