14.7 HOUSEHOLD OWNERSHIP OF MOSQUITO BEDNETSMalaria infection is a common cause of death among children in <strong>Kenya</strong>. Infection among pregnantwomen may lead to severe anaemia and infants with low birth weight. Malaria can also be deadlyfor immune‐compromised individuals and the GOK has adopted malaria prevention as a keyaspect of basic care for HIV‐infected children and adults. A cornerstone of prevention of malariatransmission is the use of mosquito bednets while sleeping, especially ones that have been treatedwith insecticide. Widespread use of insecticide‐treated nets (ITNs) reduces malaria at thepopulation level by decreasing the length of adult mosquito life spans. The distribution of malariain <strong>Kenya</strong> is not uniform due to geographical differences in altitude, rainfall and humidity, thus netdistribution is not expected to be uniform.
