3.6 RESIDENCEFigure 3.6a HIV prevalence by residence among women and men aged 15-49 years,2003 KDHS and 2007 KAIS.15Rural12.3Urban2003 KDHS2007 KAISHIV Prevalence (Weighted %)1057.58.33.65.35.67.010.47.56.310.08.70Women Men Total Women Men TotalSexFigure 3.6a. HIV prevalence varied significantly from 2003 to 2007 among rural men butnot rural women or among urban residents of either sex.HIV prevalence among rural residents was higher for both women and men in the 2007 KAIScompared to the 2003 KDHS although the difference was significant only among men. In contrast, urban HIV prevalence appeared lower, though not significantly, among women and men.In 2003, HIV prevalence among urban residents compared with rural residents was significantlygreater for both women and men. HIV prevalence was marginally greater among urban compared torural residents overall; however among women and men separately, there were no significantdifferences observed in prevalence between women in areas compared to women in rural areas, orbetween men in urban areas compared to men in rural areas. This result indicates that prevalencelevels in rural populations may be approaching that of urban populations, reflecting an expansion inthe HIV epidemic toward rural areas. Because an estimated three in four adults aged 15‐49 years livein rural areas 1 , this increase has a larger impact on the total estimated number of HIV‐infected personsin Kenya, more so than any apparent declines observed in HIV prevalence in urban areas.1The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics approximates that 75% of indivuals in Kenya are living in rural areas. Becauseexact proportions are not available, this number should be cited with caution. Although all estimates in this chapter aredescribed in more detail (with 95% confidence intervals and appropriate sample sizes) in Appendix B.2, this estimate isnot included in the appendix.KAIS 2007 57
