Within each wealth quintiles, HIV prevalence appeared to be higher among women thanmen.1The wealth index was a composite measure of the living standard of a household, calculated using data ona household’s ownership of selected assets, materials used for housing construction, water access andsanitation facilities. The wealth index placed households on a continuous scale of relative wealth usingprincipal components analysis. Individuals were ranked according to the score of the household in whichthey resided and the sample was divided into five groups, each with an equal number of individuals(quintiles), ranging from the lowest to highest level of wealth.KAIS 2007 43
