This represented morethan four fifths (83.6%) of all HIV‐infected persons in the 2007 KAIS. In the absence of HSV‐2 infection,HIV prevalence was low for both women and men (1.3% and 1.4%, respectively). Nearly 30% of all2007 KAIS participants (29.3%) were infected with HSV‐2 only and not with HIV. This wassignificantly different by sex with more women (34.6%) infected with HSV‐2 only than men (22.3%).The 2007 KAIS data did distinguish whether a person was first infected with HIV or first infected withHSV‐2 or if they were infected with both during the same encounter.KAIS 2007 222
