9.4 Blood transfusionsAlthough the risk is very small, blood transfusions have the potential of transmitting infections causedby viruses, such as HIV, to the recipient. With improved testing, the rate of transfusion‐transmittedHIV infection has reduced substantially. Amongthis group, 41.2% received their last transfusion more than 10 years prior to the survey; 17.3% of adultswith a transfusion history reported that their last transfusion occurred during the year before thesurvey. <strong>National</strong>ly, an estimated 222,000 adults received a blood transfusion the year before thesurvey. As previously described, this national estimate is based on extrapolations from projectedpopulation sizes reported from the Revised Population Projections for <strong>Kenya</strong> 2000‐2020. <strong>Kenya</strong> <strong>National</strong>Bureau of Statistics (August 2006) and therefore may not be representative of the population eligible forblood transfusion in the country.<strong>KAIS</strong> <strong>2007</strong> 173
