8.9 CURRENTLY PREGNANT WOMEN: HIV, HSV-2 AND SYPHILISHSV‐2 and syphilis infection are known to increase the risk of acquisition and transmission of HIV.Additionally, maternal genital HSV‐2 infection can result in neonatal herpes encephalitis with aninfant mortality rate in excess of 50% despite treatment.
