Knowledge of antiretroviralpreventive therapy for PMTCT was significantly greater among women who attended an ANC (76.3%)compared to women who had not (58.3%).8.5 HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING AT ANC CLINICS, 2003-2007“Opt‐out” HIV testing is offered as part of the standard package of care for all pregnant womenattending maternal‐child health services, in line with the Kenya’s national PMTCT guidelines,following a policy change in 2004.The approach consists of:• Group pre‐test counseling of all women attending an ANC• After counseling, women can choose to “opt‐out” and not take an HIV test• HIV testing using a rapid‐testing method with same day results for those who opt to take thetest• Individual post‐test counselling for all those who have taken the test.KAIS 2007 143
