Household Characteristics andImpact of HIV on Households14.1 KEY FINDINGS• <strong>National</strong>ly, 11.0% of households were affected by HIV, that is, at least oneperson in the household was infected with HIV.• Most households did not treat their drinking water (60.1% of ruralhouseholds and 52.1% of urban households), including both HIV-affectedand HIV-unaffected households.• Mosquito net coverage increased 2.5 times between the 2003 KDHS and the<strong>2007</strong> <strong>KAIS</strong>; 56.1% of households in <strong>2007</strong> owned at least one mosquito netcompared to 21.8% in 2003.• Overall, 11.1% of children under aged 18 years have lost one or both of theirparents. In Nyanza, the percent of orphaned children was 20.9%.14.2 INTRODUCTIONThis chapter presents findings from the <strong>2007</strong> <strong>KAIS</strong> on basic characteristics of households and therelationship between HIV and households. In the <strong>2007</strong> <strong>KAIS</strong>, a household was defined as a personor group of people related or unrelated to each other who live together in the same dwelling unit orcompound (group of dwelling units), share similar cooking arrangements, and identify the sameperson as head of household. The household questionnaire was administered to consenting heads ofsampled, occupied households and its main purpose was to identify women and men eligible for theindividual interview. A head of household was defined by KNBS as the key decision maker in thehousehold whose authority was recognized by other members of the household. While this authorityoften comes with economic responsibility for the household, this is not always the case and thereforewas not required to meet the definition for the <strong>2007</strong> <strong>KAIS</strong>.The household questionnaire was used to collect information on all usual residents and visitors whospent the night preceding the interview in the dwelling. Many questions were asked at thehousehold level, such as source of drinking water and type of toilet facilities; these indicators weretreated as characteristics of the dwelling unit or the household as a whole, not as a characteristic ofany particular individual. Other questions were asked about individual members of thehousehold, such as the age of each member and whether each member slept under a mosquitobednet. This information was also collected from the household questionnaire respondent.Additionally, the <strong>2007</strong> <strong>KAIS</strong> household questionnaire collected information on parental<strong>KAIS</strong> <strong>2007</strong> 241
