CHAPTER 9xsyWithinwyBetweenxmsThe difference between this example and the first part of Example 9.1 isthat the model has both a random intercept and a random slope. In thewithin part of the model, the filled circle at the end of the arrow from xto y represents a random intercept that is referred to as y in the betweenpart of the model. The filled circle on the arrow from x to y represents arandom slope that is referred to as s in the between part of the model. Inthe between part of the model, the random intercept and random slopeare shown in circles because they are continuous latent variables thatvary across clusters. The observed cluster-level covariate xm takes thevalue of the mean of x for each cluster. The within and between parts ofthe model correspond to level 1 and level 2 of a conventional multilevelregression model with a random intercept and a random slope. In the within part of the model, the | symbol is used in conjunction withTYPE=RANDOM to name and define the random slope variables in themodel. The name on the left-hand side of the | symbol names therandom slope variable. The statement on the right-hand side of the |symbol defines the random slope variable. Random slopes are definedusing the ON option. The random slope s is defined by the linearregression of the dependent variable y on the observed individual-level244
